Coolio was only the start…
Yesterday saw the launch of PornHub Records with a competition to find the ultimate hymn for the label. For Pornhub, Coolio was only a start: ‘we have noticed a strong musical presence since the very start of the site‘ Matt Blake explains, the site’s PR and marketing manager. The artists download the non-censored versions of their own songs there to create a buzz. Last June, New York artist Falty DL promoted his single Some Jazz Shit on the platform with a suggestive video (don’t get too excited, we only get to see an empty bed). As for Xiu Xiu, his video Black Dick is vastly more explicit… We’ll leave the over-18s amongst you to judge for yourselves.

Coolio’s video had over 500,000 views in its first week. In the competition launched yesterday, the winner will receive $5000 and a guaranteed 500,000 views (and with the site hitting 40 million views per day, the estimate seems rather low). According to the vice-president of PornHub, Corey Price, ‘the revenue of the site is based on advertising. We are looking for content which fits with our target audience: explicit lyrics for an adult audience; no boy bands or teen pop for example. We have received erotic folk music videos, the same for rap, house and country. It’ll all become clear.’
We thought that American music videos had taken Californian gonzo to the extreme with all the ‘booty’ and ‘pussy’ put on show in the twerking phenomenon. This takes things to the next level, we can already picture hordes of EDM fiends charging to the new platform. Although, once more, Paris Hilton and her sex tape have beaten them to it… So the circle comes back around and Pornhub will be the proof: EDM is to electronic music what porn is to sex: simplified, americanised and anonymised. Which isn’t to say that we can’t have fun dancing to it for want of anything better, but to content oneself with it alone would no doubt cause serious damage to one’s mental health… A word to the wise.EDM is to music what porn is to sex!
